1. Before you start

WindowReturn needs macOS 14 or later. During setup, allow Accessibility access so it can move and resize your windows.

In System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Mission Control:

  • Turn on “Displays have separate Spaces.”
  • Turn off “Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use.”

To reopen saved Finder folders, also allow WindowReturn to control Finder when macOS asks. This permission is optional.

2. A layout isn't restoring?

  1. Open WindowReturn from the menu bar and check for any setup message.
  2. Make sure you have connected the monitors you used when saving the layout.
  3. Check the two Mission Control settings listed above.
  4. Try applying the layout manually. If any windows could not be restored, check the message shown in the app.
  5. If an app has just opened, wait for its window to appear and try again.

3. Getting help

Tell us what you expected and what happened. Include your WindowReturn and macOS versions, Mac model, how your monitors are connected, and the name of the app affected. If WindowReturn shows a support code, include that too.

Keep license keys, passwords, personal files, and saved layout files out of your message. If you send a screenshot, hide private information first.

4. Download help

Use the official download linked on this page. If macOS shows a security warning, do not bypass it—contact us for help.

Advanced: verify the download manually

This optional check compares your downloaded file with the official release. Version 0.1.4 SHA-256:

In Terminal, run this command from the folder containing the download:

shasum -a 256 "WindowReturn-0.1.4.dmg"

The result must exactly match the value above. If it differs, do not open the file.

5. Uninstall WindowReturn

To free up your license activation, deactivate it in WindowReturn before uninstalling. Then quit the app and move it from Applications to the Trash.

Uninstalling does not delete your saved layouts. To remove them too, delete them in WindowReturn before uninstalling. Some licensing information remains on your Mac to prevent trial resets. Contact support if you need help removing local data.

6. Purchase and activation

Buy WindowReturn using the link below. Your order email explains how to get your license key. Enter it in the app to activate. If you need help, send us your order number—not your license key.
